Gregory Sams thinks that the reason we threaten the future of the planet that sustains us is because we have become a significantly dominant species and yet still work in ignorance of one of the most basic operating principles of the universe, one that has recently been recognized in the new science known as "chaos theory". He seeks to convince us through his book that no new combination or rearrangement of the government power will work. We can see crime proliferating as more and more money is spent combatting it. We see our health decline as more and more is spent on sickness care by the state. Considering history, looking through time, it is apparrent that there have already been thousands of different combinations of government attempted (pharaon, church, senate, king, emperor, president, military junta, parliament...). None of them have worked in the long term, though some lasted more years than others. The world is full of the magnificient ruins of past civilazations ; the temples, statues and fortresses that remain as the monuments to the pomp and paranoia of the past rulers. Had the romains invented dynamite it is unlikely that even those would remain.

When a government is said to be "in power" it holds that power for the simple reason that it has the ability to force us to or not do that which it decides is best.

What would happen if instead of counting on the state to decide what's wrong and right we would take responsability for ourselves ? A free society would have no difficulty with many things now thought unacceptable by the state. It could tolerate herbalists, street traders, gambling clubs ( we live with the lottery), prostitution and many forms of activity and entreprise now banned, discouraged or licenced. Much of what consenting adults do with their own bodies and minds, in their own time, is still regulated by criminal laws. There are nations where homosexuals are jailed. Just imagine if our society beleived music to be so important to our lives it had to be regulated, like housing, with strict government control and regulation. Would we ever had jazz, rhytm & blues, rock 'n roll, the Beatles, rock, ambiant music, or techno in any of its manifestations. Why should we let officials of the government be responsible for our living standards, when so many of the problems they deal with are caused by them, or would not be seen as problems to anyone else but them. The state is responsible for the surplus of cattle that were fed back to themselves, as a mean of reducing the "beef mountain". This created the conditions for growth and spread of BSE(mad cow disease).
